About Uchiura Bay (Volcano Bay)

„Uchiura Bay is in the southwestern part of Hokkaido and is surrounded on three sides by Oshima peninsula. The bay is also referred to as Volcano Bay or Iburi Bay.

„The bay is surrounded by Muroran-shi's Earth Cape (Etomo Peninsula), Matsuyazaki at the foot of Mount Komagatake, and the east shore of the base of Oshima peninsula. It is a nearly circular bay with a diameter of 50km.

„The bay is also known as Volcano Bay, and legend has it that when the captain of an English ship that visited the area in the Meiji period saw the volcanoes of Mount Komagatake and Mount Usu which surround the bay, he said gThis is Volcano Bay.h
