Shikotsu-Toya National Park

The Shikotsu-Toya National Park has distinctive natural scenery, including a caldera lake that is one of the most well known in Japan and Toyako, Mount Yotei, Mount Tarumae, and Mount Usu, all of which were created by volcanic activity. While also preserving the area’s beautiful nature, the park is located near the major cities of Hokkaido providing easy access. As such, the park is visited by many people, both residents of Hokkaido and people from farther away who want to experience nature.


Summary

The area was designated a national park on May 16, 1949, making it the 14th national park in Japan. The park has a total area of 99,302 hectares and is composed of five areas ? Lake Toya, Jyouzankei/Nakayama Pass, Lake Shikotsu, Noboribetsu/Orohure Pass, and Mount Yotei. Furthermore, the area includes some of Hokkaido’s leading onsen (hot spring) towns, such as Toyako-cho, Noboribetsu, and Jyouzankei.
